Types of Forklift Batteries
There are two types of forklift batteries — lead-acid and lithium-ion. They each have different pros and cons that may make one or the other more appropriate for your facility’s needs.
Lead-Acid
Lead-acid batteries have been around for decades, proving their reliability and dependability. They are rechargeable batteries with a high power-to-weight ratio, weighing anywhere between 800 to 4,000 pounds. Their weight serves as a counterbalance, allowing you to transport large loads easily.
Lead-acid batteries have low upfront costs and take several hours to charge and cool down, so if you only use a few forklifts intermittently, this battery may be an ideal option.
Lithium-Ion
Lithium-ion batteries are also rechargeable, boasting a high energy density and a low discharge rate. This lithium and graphite battery is lighter than a lead-acid type, usually weighing somewhere between 500 and 2,500 pounds.
Lithium-ion batteries only need a few hours to charge, making them a great option when running several shifts. They are also more energy-efficient, saving you money in the long run.
Forklift Battery Maintenance
Lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries have many differences in their maintenance requirements.
Lead-Acid
Forklift Lead-acid batteries require watering to function properly, as the battery’s cells need water to provide the necessary chemicals and electrolytes for power production. Too much or too little water will damage the battery, so it’s essential to monitor the water levels frequently. Batteries will need to be watered at least once or twice a week.
In addition to watering, lead-acid batteries need to be serviced twice a year to manage acid and corrosion. Other maintenance needs include:
- Inspecting for defects
- Maintaining electrolyte level above separator protectors
- Tightening vent caps
Lithium-Ion
Forklift Lithium-ion batteries don’t require any watering. To keep these batteries in working condition, be sure to keep them charged at all times. Store them at room temperature and away from moisture.
You’ll need to perform:
- Frequent checks for plug and cable wear
- Charger monitoring for fault conditions
- Software updates
- Partial discharges
Replacing a Forklift Battery
Most batteries last for about 1,500 charging cycles. Once your battery no longer charges to full, it may be time to replace it.
A few other signs that it’s time to replace the battery include:
- Corrosion buildup on the battery case
- Smoke while the forklift is charging or in use
- A sulfurous smell resembling rotten eggs
